1st Annual GenUN Case Competition

Dear Bruins,

The United Nations Association of the United States America presents the 1st Annual GenUN Case Competition. The GenUN case competition aims at providing a platform to the youth of today to voice their opinions, and find innovative solutions regarding some of the most complex International Issues in the world. In this year’s case competition, participants will tackle the refugee crisis in Syria.

In order to participate:

  • Students must be currently enrolled in an Undergraduate program at UCLA.
  • Major is not a constraint; all majors are welcome to participate.
  • Teams must consist of 3-5 members. However, if you are unable to form a team, please email us and a team will be assigned to you.
  • Teams must prepare a 15-minute presentation. Your presentation must identify key issues, provide possible solutions to the problems and if possible, provide a detailed plan.
  • Each team must donate $10 to any organization assisting refugees, we recommend http://www.unausa.org/programs/adopt-a-futureor http://www.unhcr.org/en-us . However, you can donate to any legitimate organization. Please send us a copy of the acknowledgement/receipt of your donation.

Participants will get the experience of tackling some of the most complex issues head on. They will get the opportunity to receive feedback from top UN officials, experts in the field, professors, NGO workers and so on. The winners will have their solutions sent to the UN High Commission on Refugees via UNA-USA and will also be posted on the UNA-USA website. Finalists will have an exclusive networking session with the judges and guests. The following guests have confirmed their participation:

  • Dr James Gelvin, Professor at UCLA, Author of various book on the Middle East
  • Congressman Ted Lieu (Invited), Congressman 33rd District
  • Anna Mahalak (remote judge), Youth Engagement Manager, UNA-USA

The relevant dates of the event are as follows:

  • Oct 12th Wednesday: Kickoff Event.
  • Oct 18th Tuesday:  1st Around Cases Due
  • Oct 24th Monday:  Final Round and Closing Event.
