New Course: Middle Eastern/Jewish Studies 177 – Gender, LGBTQ, & Ethnicity in Israeli Culture: The Struggle for Equality

Capture2This course focuses on gender categorizations such as masculinity and
femininity, cultural conventions relating to sexual and ethnical roles, and
on social representation in Israeli visual culture. We will examine themes
such as gender politics, different aspects of LGBTQ in Israeli culture,
sexuality and the body, ethnicity and race. The course will cover three
main aspects: women, LGBTQ and ethnic groups’ social roles and their
struggle for equality; compartmentalization and discrimination; and
their achievements as depicted in Israeli culture. Gender and LGBTQ
conflicts will be examined through history, culture, and art, deepening the
understanding of the Israeli social fabric.
