Assistant Professor in Islamic Studies

The Department of Near Eastern Languages & Cultures at the University of California, Los Angeles, announces a search for a tenure-track position in Islamic Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor with a hire date of July 1, 2018. We encourage applicants whose specializations relate to early and classical Islam up to the early Ottoman era and whose teaching and graduate advising complement the areas covered by the current faculty. Applicants must be able to conduct research in classical Arabic as well as other relevant European and Islamicate languages (with a strong preference for research proficiency in Persian and/or Ottoman Turkish). The department is particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching in Islamic Studies engage (broader) cultural and intellectual traditions, are transdisciplinary in scope, and grounded in philological expertise. We seek candidates with demonstrably strong teaching skills who are committed to undergraduate teaching in a leading, large public university. Teaching duties include undergraduate general education courses and upper level courses as relevant to the Islamic Studies program. Candidate will be required to teach graduate seminars using primary sources, advise undergraduate and graduate students, and perform administrative duties associated with the Islamic Studies program. Teaching and service which contribute to diversity-related initiatives are also highly desired.
