DESCRIPTION:Helen Evans is the Mary and Michael Jaharis Curator for Byzantine Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, NYC. She joined the Museum’s staff in 1991 and is responsible for the acquisition\, study\, and interpretation of the Museum’s collection of early Christian\, early Jewish\, and early-to-late East Christian and Byzantine art. Her exhibitions—including Byzantium and Islam (2012)\, Byzantium: Faith and Power (2004)\, and The Glory of Byzantium (1997)—have explored the importance of Byzantine art and its connections beyond its borders. DESCRIPTION:The exhibition of thirty images illustrating the artistic achievement of the Armenian communities in the Crimea\, Ukraine\, Poland\, Romania\, and Bulgaria over several centuries in sacred and secular architecture\, painting\, silverwork\, stone and wood carving\, and other media complements the analytical discourse of the conference panels in introducing viewers directly to the objects themselves and thereby evoking the space of the merchant and artisan centers in that region that served as the matrix for those exquisite expressions of Armenian creativity. Introduction by the Curator\, Hrair Hawk Khatcherian. \n  \nHrair Khatcherian is an internationally renowned photographer who for almost three decades\, has been presenting exhibitions and lectures across the globe\, making Armenia an accessible reality for all. SUMMARY:Hidden Treasures Unearthed: Armenian Arts and Culture of Eastern Europe
DESCRIPTION:The conference seeks to contribute to a longue durée approach to Near Eastern engagement with Europe with an emphasis on the early modern period (16th-18thcc.)\, which marked the heyday of Armenian communities as a crucial component of international trade hubs in eastern Europe\, involving an interdisciplinary focus on the multifaceted role those communities played in hemispheric commerce marked by exchange in commodities\, ideas\, technological innovation\, and sociocultural values. Exploring the evolution of those centers as settings for the symbiosis the Armenian communities entered into with their immediate host societies\, it views those expanding relations under the broader impact of the large-scale\, transformative sociopolitical\, economic\, and religious developments of that timeframe. SUMMARY:Opening at the Close: History and Politics in Late-10th- Century Armenia
DESCRIPTION:This paper explores the spectrum of Armenian historical writing from the second half of the 10th century\, arguing for a remarkable diversity of approach and experience. \n\n\nDr. Timothy W. Greenwood received his D.Phil from the University of Oxford\, and is a Senior Lecturer in the School of History at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. His teaching interests extend across mediaeval Byzantium and the Near East (6th–11th centuries) with particular interest in the Caucasus and Sasanian Persia. His research is centered upon Armenian political\, social and cultural history across the same period\, analyzing and exploiting literary\, epigraphic and architectural sources. SUMMARY:2015: Discourse on the Armenian Condition
DESCRIPTION:A lecture by Seta B. Dadoyan (Independent scholar) \nThursday\, November 10\, 2016\n4:00 PM\n10383 Bunche Hall\nUCLA \nThe talk\, based on her recently published bilingual volume  The Armenian Condition in Hindsight and Foresight: A Discourse\, (Ontario: 2015) will focus on the basic arguments in support of the “peculiarities”\, which define the Armenian condition and through which Dadoyan runs a critical assessment of it in hindsight and foresight\, combining rather than separating the poles and methods of philosophy and social sciences. Taking the Centenary of the Genocide as a three dimensional “event” – past\, present\, future – she suggests new contexts and tools to reevaluate the intellectual culture\, historiography\, institutional practice\, cultural and linguistic policies\, and other areas of the Armenian “Metasystem.” The objective of the “discourse” is to open a space/forum for dialogue\, debate and critique. \nSeta B. Dadoyan holds a Doctor of Sciences in Philosophy. From 1981 to 2011 she taught at the American University of Beirut\, Haigazian University\, Columbia University (as Ordjanian Visiting Professor)\, St. Nersess Seminary\, University of Chicago\, and Yerevan State University. She is the recipient of two medals\, Dawit Anyaght‘ and Mesrop Mashtoc‘.
