It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nadjib Berber, the beloved husband of our own Susan Slyomovics. Nadjib passed away on March 4th following a courageous battle with cancer. Nadjib was a great comic artist who participated in and organized many comix events in the US and Algeria. He worked in the Algerian press (African Revolution, El Djoumhouria) and for the Tunisian children’s review Kaous Kouzah (Rainbow). Following his move to England in 1992, he designed university posters, flyers, and other publications directed towards the student body. Nadjib conveyed his sublime humor in ways that only he could through various postcards, political cartoons, and design ads for academic and non-academic publications. Most recently, he published, with our colleague Aomar Boum, a graphic novel, Undesirables: A Holocaust Journey to North Africa.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Susan and her family during this difficult time. Nadjib’s memory is one of joy, comfort, and inspiration for all.
Nadjib was an avid supporter of the arts, and in his memory, his family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the art organization of your choice.
