Ancient Nubia: Kingdoms along the Nile

May 28 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Nubian Studies is increasingly drawing doctoral students to UCLA, the only such program in the United States, and one of a handful in the world. Four scholars will present their work during this symposium, each touching on one chronological phase of the history of Nubia.

Elizabeth Minor (California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo) will discuss her doctoral research on the earliest Nubian kingdom of Kerma (2500-1500 BCE).

Christopher Cox (Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, UCLA) will present his doctoral research on the royal iconography employed during the second Nubian kingdom of Napata (ca. 900-300 BCE).

Solange Ashby (Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, UCLA) will discuss funerary traditions of the final, pre-Christian Nubian kingdom of Meroe (300 BCE – 300 CE).

Salim Faraji (California State University – Dominguez Hills) will discuss the arrival of Christianity in Nubia with the proclamation of the Noubade king Silko.
