Graduate Seminar in Armenian Studies: “The Traditional Armenian Genre of Lullaby within its Broader Folkloric Context

Ms. Hagopyan will begin her lecture by first sketching the diverse musical genres that
developed in Armenia over the centuries and especially those related to traditional village
life, transitioning thereafter to her main theme of lullaby. She will illustrate her
presentation with a range of musical examples.

Ms. Hagopyan is a musicologist and folklorist, a junior researcher at the Institute of Art of the National Academy of Sciences of the Armenian Republic. She also chairs the
Department of History of Music at the Romanos Melikyan State College of Music. The author of a series of studies on different aspects of traditional music, she has specialized in the characteristics of the genre of lullaby.
