New Horizons in Premodern Iranian Studies
Date: May 4, 2024
Location: University of California, Irvine
Keynote: Dr. Adam Benkato, Bita Daryabari Presidential Chair in Iranian Studies, Department of Middle Eastern Languages & Cultures, University of California, Berkeley
The conveners of this conference, under the aegis of the Samuel M. Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture, welcome the submission of abstracts from graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty of the University of California institutions on any aspect of the study of Iranian premodernity, from studies of the Indo-Aryan linguistics in the Eurasian Bronze Age up to the establishment of the Safavid dynasty in 1501. We encourage applicants to interrogate the disciplinary boundaries of Iranian Studies and explore entanglements and interactions that stress or even transcend those boundaries. This conference will both showcase in-progress research amongst junior and senior scholars at the University of California and provide a forum for collaborative engagement on these and future academic ventures.
For consideration, please submit an abstract of 300-500 words along with your name, home institution, title, and degree program (for graduate students) via this form or in .doc or .pdf format to NewHorizonsIranianStudies@gmail.com by January 31, 2024. The organizers of this conference will apprise interested participants of their acceptance by February 19, 2024. Authors whose abstracts are accepted should submit a draft of their work to the NewHorizonsIranianStudies@gmail.com account by April 1, 2024 for circulation amongst panel discussants.
The organizing committee is currently exploring the possibility of publishing particularly intriguing papers as a special issue of a relevant journal in the field (currently contingent upon the breadth of subjects explored by participants).
We hope you will join us in Irvine!
